Asanas for Osteoporosis

Most of us don’t think of yoga as a regiment to support bone health but there is increasing evidence that adding yoga to your fitness routine can have an impact on bone health. An estimated forty-four million (2016) American suffer from bone loss and 1.5 million of them will experience bone fractures annually. Studies have shown that the only way to keep this disease at bay is to exercise. Dr. Loren Fishman, medical director of Manhattan Physical Medicine, has done extensive research showing that yoga can prevent, slow and even reverse bone loss in patients. The asanas (poses) that are the best suited to build strength are the following: Big Toe Pose, Bridge Pose, Dolphin Plank Pose, Dolphin Pose, Down-Facing Dog, Extended Hand-to-Big-Toe Pose, Extended Side Angle Pose, Extended Triangle Pose, and Half-Moon. These poses are part of our asana program at Pineapple Yoga Studio.
